Optimize Page Speed for Mobile Search: Three Simple Tips

Last week Google announced an algorithm update for mobile search: "The Speed Update."

"People want to...find answers to their questions as fast as possible," Google wrote on its Webmaster Blog. "Although speed has been used in ranking for some time, that signal was focused on desktop searches. Today we’re announcing that starting in July 2018, page speed will be a ranking factor for mobile searches."

Although this new ranking factor will only effect pages with the slowest user experience--a small percentage of all queries--it is a timely reminder for all mobile websites: speed matters.

In its post announcing the Speed Update, Google links to a study that reveals the value of page speed:

"The average time it takes to fully load a mobile landing page is 22 seconds," writes Daniel An, for Google. "Yet 53% of visits are abandoned if a mobile site takes longer than three seconds to load."

If your mobile site is slow--or merely efficient--optimizing page speed can make the difference between a click and a bounce.

Online, speed matters: "53% of visits are abandoned if a mobile site takes three seconds to load."

Tips for Optimizing Mobile Page Speed

Faster pages load faster, often rank better, and often lead to more conversions. So how do you assure your page speed is optimized?

Streamline Your Pages with the AMP Template

Google introduced Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) in 2016. The AMP versions of web pages, now highlighted by a lightening bolt, often appear at the top of mobile search queries. These pages (and many sites) have been optimized for mobile speed by using the AMP HTML template that limits page elements and streamlines design.

The AMP template is an open-access software available to anyone, so streamlining any given web page is as simple as following the AMP tutorial. Of course, the AMP template requires a knowledge of HTML code, so it's best to leave this work to your design team--or your most HTML-savvy employee.

You can, of course, streamline your page elements without using the AMP template by reducing the number of elements on your page, especially slow-loading elements that are not necessary, like excessive images.

Compress Your Pages

"No matter what, faster is better and less is more," Daniel An writes for Google. "Simply compressing images and text can be a game changer."

There are many tools online for "compressing" your pages by reducing the size of the code itself. HTML, CSS, or JavaScript can all be reduced to make pages load faster. If you search SEO articles, many experts recommend the Gzip software, which can be downloaded here.

However, you can also find tools, like this "HTML compressor" that do not require a download-- you simply paste your page's code in the "compressor."

Web servers can actually do this work for you, if you enable compression. For more information, read "How to Optimize Your Site with Gzip Compression."

Optimize Server Response Time

Server response time is simply the time if takes for a server to respond to a request from a browser, like Google. To optimize your server's response time you may choose to pay more for enhanced hosting options.

With a little know-how, however, you can save yourself the money by learning how to use your current hosting options more efficiently.

There are plenty of tutorials for optimizing server response time. We appreciate the simplicity of this tutorial.
