Local Businesses: Hack the SERP with Google My Business Posts
In last week's post, we asked a simple question: Why Does Organic SEO Take Time?
As we noted, to secure a durable place on a first page SERP (search engine results page), most--but not all--websites perform organic SEO for six months or more.
During the time, the website is audited and optimized for technical aspects and content. This process can take weeks to months. After optimization begins, the site must also attract the attention of Google's crawlers. This process can take days to weeks.
Of course, too, because the SERP is a dynamic space, influenced by changing algorithms and new competitors, most websites continue to perform organic SEO indefinitely.
So, yes, organic SEO does take time.
This is why many websites combine organic SEO with other forms of online marketing, like search engine marketing, a paid form of advertising which can produce first page results quickly.
The drawback of search engine marketing, of course, is the cost, which is often prohibitive for many keywords. And keywords are, well, the key to most forms of online marketing.
When optimizing or advertising for keywords, a website hopes to attract the attention of new customers. A browser may not know your brand but he/she may find you by searching for any one of your targeted keywords.

In a nutshell, this is the online marketing game. Organic SEO. Search Engine Marketing. Keywords.
However, of course, online marketing also includes other strategies that can amplify your website quite quickly--especially for websites who have already created engagement online or offline.

Using online reputation management techniques, for example, many local websites can produce first page results in a matter of seconds.
Are you taking advantage of the following simple, free, and easy SERP hack?
Hack the SERP with Google My Business Posts
Google My Business (GMB) is the single best free marketing tool available to websites online. Of course, we consider a GMB account a must for all local business, yet many do not know it exists. This is a shame. GMB is not only free but exceedingly simple.
To create an account, you simply fill out your business info, with special attention to details like your business category. This information populates the local map as well as the knowledge graph, two powerful SEO tools.
If a browser searches for your brand name, your GMB account may offer your most visible online presence (even more than your website). And if browser searches related keywords, your GMB can perform a form of organic SEO: Even browsers who do not know your brand name may find your GMB account.
This is especially true for local businesses. Imagine, for example, a local browser searching "local restaurants." If you have a viable GMB account, your business will likely show up in the first page results.
In itself, then, GMB offers a simple, easy "hack" for the SERP. Yet even businesses who have GMB may not be aware of Google Posts, a relatively new feature that allows you to publish new, dynamic content to the SERP.
Recently, Google announced the addition of two new types of posts: products and features.
"By creating posts," Google says, "you can place your timely content in front of customers when they find your business listing on Google."

With posts, you could advertise events, product updates, and announcements. Now, with the product and offer posts, you can post product details and deals directly to the front page of the SERP.
As we noted before: "The SEO implications of this new feature are clear: by creating relevant content, you engage users in a new way, which may draw more visitors to your website as well as your actual location, and you offer Google more data to enrich your local listing."
