The Top Five Online Marketing Strategies

In today's post, we will help you answer a question from our recent post on finding an online marketing firm: What is the best online marketing strategy to achieve my conversion goals?

The list below contains what we consider the Big Five Online Marketing Strategies.

Of course, there are more than five online marketing strategies. Some articles count up to ten options. And many articles speak about the same strategies in varying ways. In reality, though, the five options listed below cover most types of online marketing.

For each, we offer a brief description as well as helpful links to more comprehensive articles.

You can do most of your marketing from a single laptop--if you know how to perform online marketing

Organic Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

To achieve visibility in search engine results, a website generally has a few options, including the two most popular forms of online marketing: organic SEO and paid advertising. (Alex Stepman, the sponsor of The Organic SEO Blog often refers to organic SEO as "natural website optimization.")

Many writers distinguish between the two by clarifying the "cost" of the strategy.

Organic SEO uses certain strategies or tools to elevate a website's content in "free" search results. There is no outright cost to perform SEO. Of course, most websites hire SEO firms to perform optimization--depending on the firm, monthly costs for SEO can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars.

The goal of organic SEO is to maintain a high placement on the "free" search results. To do so, SEO firms track the search engine's ever-changing algorithms. This work can be tedious and time-consuming. Organic SEO can be the most cost-effective solution to online marketing, yet SEO can take time to produce a first page result.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

To supplement organic SEO, many firms use search engine marketing, a "paid" form of advertising that places your website on the first page results for specific keywords.

Paid advertisements account for a majority of search engine's profits. On its Investor Relations page, Google's parent company, Alphabet, says, "Today, the majority of our revenue comes from advertising" (Source).

The cost for advertisers can vary--from a cent to a hundred dollars--depending on the competition. As Minterest notes:

"The price you need to pay Google depends on the competition for that particular keyword(s)...The Cost Per Click (CPC) varies from $0.01 to $100 (or maybe even more). Advertisers are willing to pay as high as $54 per click for insurance, mortgages, and loans related keywords."

However it's important to remember: Google's reputation depends on the quality of its "organic" results. Organic SEO, or "free" marketing, offers relevant, unbiased results for any given search. This is why so many firms use a combination of organic SEO and SEM.

Content Marketing

If you Google "what is content marketing?" you will likely come across this definition from the Content Marketing Institute:

"Content marketing is the marketing and business process for creating and distributing relevant and valuable content to attract, acquire, and engage a clearly defined and understood target audience – with the objective of driving profitable customer action."

In essence, this does not sound all that different from the content-making process of organic SEO, which includes keyword research (target audience) and conversion optimization (driving profitable customer action).

One difference lies in content marketing's emphasis on distribution. SEO attempts to attract traffic from the search engines. In addition to this, content marketing attempts to send traffic to a site from a third-party platform.

Also, content marketing focuses on the content itself--as opposed to the product. As we noted before:

"In reality, content marketing is as old as marketing itself. What is marketing if not the marketing of some form of content? In traditional marketing, the product itself--its packaging, its suggested use, its name--is the content. What makes content marketing new, if anything, is an emphasis on content that is independent from the product."

Social Media Marketing

As the name implies, social media marketing is marketing performed on social media sites, like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and even Pinterest.

Most brands engage in some form of social media marketing--but few brands do so successfully.

Each social media site is governed by its own "rules of engagement." Marketing on Reddit, for example, is completely different than marketing on Facebook or Twitter. Unfortunately, most social media marketing attempts a "catch-all" approach, simply re-posting the same content across different platforms.

As we've noted before, this is the single worst social media mistake.

Instead, brands should try to understand the nuances of each platform, and strive to create content amenable to each. To do so, we believe firms must ask themselves three crucial questions.
